The Aquarian by KatieHofgard The Aquarian by KatieHofgard
Many people associate the sign of Aquarius with water, seeing as it's derived from the word "aqua". However, Aquarius is dominantly an air sign, and means "water bearer". Being an Aquarian myself, I can't help but revisit the concept again after making this piece back in 2005. I also can't help myself with these chunky swirly designs. XD

This piece will be for sale in the Further Confusion 2009 art show in San Jose!

Done in markers, colored pencil, acrylic and vine charcoal
9" 10" bristol board

I'm a Cancer, so my element is water, and I love how you depicted it here. A lot of people say that black and blue don't go together, but I tend to like the combination; the contrast of rough darkness and smooth, calm blue. Very nice!!

im a leo, myself. what kind of markers/colored pencil do you prefer? im looking to buy some more art supplies, but want to get away from crayola stuff. lol.
KatieHofgard Featured By Owner Jan 27, 2010  Professional Digital Artist
I use prismacolor markers and colored pencils. Crayola markers are really shitty actually, so I'd stay away from them. Prismas are pretty accessible and easy to use, but expensive.

Oh yes, I remember this one from way back when. It was probably one of the first I saw. Very pretty and a fine job!

Ah. I'm a Tauren, so my element is Earth. :hmm: But it doesn't really suit me.

Was wondering; what do you do to make the water look so....real? I can never do liquids.
KatieHofgard Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
Well, I looked up some photos of what water looks like in midair, and just used what I observed to make my own! It's very "mirrory" and high contrast looking.

Wow, nice picture! Great job with the character's pose and the colouring. I particularly like the blue parts and how they complement the water being manipulated in his hands.

And I love the water very much.

I'm always amazed at how soft you make the fur on your drawings look.

I would have to say your fur and feathers are very unique to your art. Is your coloring technique something you taught yourself?

Another lovely piece :3
I still have the commission I got from you- it's up on my wall :D

Thanks so much! ^__^ Sorry for my late reply, I do appreciate your comment... I did teach myself this technique, though I think lots of other artists use it.
Kielena Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2009
Love the Black and Blue color scheme. And the wings actually look like they belong! (Some try to add wings and they FAIL.) And, as always, excelent job with the texture.

Hey I’m an Aquarius too :)
My mom who loves and is fascinated by Astronomy doesn't like when people say that Aquarius is a water sign, but is actually a wind sign. I love when people actually see that :D

I do adore this picture so much! Awesome anatomy and emotion on this piece very beautiful in deeded! I love how the water has a blue reflection on the fur, making a blue tint, amazing detail there!! ^^

Man I admire your art so much! I wish I was as talented at creating textures and having appropriate lighting as you are. Your art always looks so clean, I get wrapped up in every one of your pieces. You are probably the only artist I watch whose work I stare at for a very long time just taking in all the detail. XD
SapphirexKitsune Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2009
I'm virgo. *annoyed sigh* As you all know what that means, and how it's ALWAYS represented...
Can't remember what element virgo is though...was it water? *shrugs*

I am an Aquarius but my birthstone is like.. purple?
KatieHofgard Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
The aquarius birthstone is Amethyst, which you can actually purchase for relatively little! I have a lot of amethyst stuff because it's my birthstone. =3
JourneyWithin Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2009  Student General Artist
Ahh sweet, When I went to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls I bought a wolf howling and it was on a rock of Amethyst, it lays by my bed to this day :3
