Guiding Light - Furries Furever Art Book by KatieHofgard Guiding Light - Furries Furever Art Book by KatieHofgard
Here is the big illustration I did for the upcoming furry art tutorial book called "Furries Furever", the third in a series published by IMPACT and put together by Lindsay Cibos and Jared Hodges.  The 128 page full color book features art by myself and several other furry artists, as we explore our painting and drawing process.  For my part, there are step-by-step instructions on how I dis this painting and others.

When I was asked to do a full illustration for the book featuring ANY anthro animal I wanted, I absolutely had to pick bats.  Bats are one of my most favorite animals in the entire world!  They are are only group of mammals to achieve true powered flight, their variety is stunningly vast and fascinating, and they are incredibly important to the ecosystems they occupy.  Here, and anthro bat parent guide their young through a firefly filled night on the little one's first flight.

According to Amazon, the release date is August 13.  Here in the US, Lindsay says she often sees the first two books in the series at Michaels and Barnes and Noble, so those will be good places to find it.
Here are some places you can preorder it online:

Barnes & Noble -…
Impact Publisher -…

Wow, this is GORGEOUS. The lighting is brilliant, and I love the different angles you were able to use with this one! Great job with the contrasting colors, and the shading is beautiful as usual. Great work, dear!

Yet another great piece by one of my all-time favorite artists. Though this comment is a bit late- I always love seeing your artwork. It's in a style that I wish I could learn how to do, with great detail, smooth colors, great layout... you know how to balance things so well. You inspire me daily- so thank you for that.

And I also envy the backgrounds you manage to do ;-; I envy it with a passion. Haha

Oh dude, there is a store near my house that sells the impact books! I'll keep an eye out for it there.

Man.... if only I could draw and make art even a -quarter- as well as you do, I would be so happy! lol.  This is yet another gorgeous piece.  It takes real skill to do night scene lighting, and you do it with such ease!  It's great to see some bat anthro art - they don't get nearly as much love as they should!  I also greatly enjoy that you included the veining in the wings.  Beautiful, beautiful work Shadow-Wolf!

I have seen many different anthros but bats have never been one of the animals anthropomorphized. I honestly have thought about it but never figured how you could pull it off effectively. I now see that you've accomplished that, however, and the result works so well. I can always, always appreciate anthro designs that retain the basic anatomical qualities of their respective animal. I see no other way as doing them any justice.
For example, wolf anthros that retain digitigrade leg structure and hands and feet that still are very close to being paws. Legs, hands, feet, and faces that are super humanized  just bother me.

 Here you have kept with the wing structure of the bats along with their faces and changed their legs just enough to make them able to stand upright and use them, it seems, also to carry things like lanterns in flight Wink/Razz  I just love it.

I love bats in general too, though I've been afraid to start drawing them as they are quite different from other creatures I've drawn before. One of these days I'm gonna start, and seeing stuff like this makes me want to move more and more close to doing so. :) (Smile)

Well, now that I think of it, I have seen one or two, but they weren't very good compared to these.

hah,yeah - I saw with arms amd wings seperately and arm-wing thing ( but then it means arm has about 8-10 fingers lol XD )

this drawing is actually closer to Disney cartoonish drawings, but, as we remember, furry started from it X) so its really nice c;

Very refreshing to see some bat anthros. Nice work on the fireflies too.
BatBlaster Featured By Owner Jul 18, 2014
Nice job on getting the wings right, and not taking the six limbed route.  Wait, are they there to eat all those fireflies

this background is so painterly i  love it <3

Eski id you don't mind I was wondering. How do you prevent your art from being thieved? I had my first experience recently.

Also was wondering if you know of any good lighting tutorials. Lighting is my weakest element of my pictures.. and motivation.

Thanks in advance hun! And if you are too busy don't worry bout it! I shall google :3

Oh my goodness this is one of my favorite pieces on deviantArt, not even exaggerating. :love: Your lighting is breathtaking and bats are my favorite critters and they're albino too and your expressions are just flawless I could go on and on and on. I've always enjoyed your work but this piece really got me. Wasn't going to buy "Furries Forever" originally as I own the other two but I'm reconsidering now. XD

I'm pleased to see these books, and i've seen them on the shelf at my books a million before it closed, but i do wish there were more entries by artists who tend to be more realistic.

But, tbese books are well above and beyond that atrocity of an art book by christopher hart and the team of people he rips off. In his 'draw furries' book, he's got a page that demonstrates how a digitigrade leg works and its one of the most anatomically incorrect and dare i say offensive representations i've ever seen because its like 'has no one working on this book ever taken an anatomy course, studied anatomy, or hell, LOOKED AT AN ANIMAL OR HUMAN BEING?"

that said, gorgeous pic. I really love your lighting and batties are absolutely adorable ;3;

I love the way you anthropomorphized these bats! Bats are a bit difficult to do as anthros while maintaining believable anatomy, and I think you did this beautifully.

 The bat carrying the lantern is really original :D

I remember when you were painting this on a stream a long time ago. The way you do sharp lighting is my absolute favorite.

This is so beautiful! I love lighting effects. I love bats. I love anthros that are more natural in design. I may die of love overload.
